In addition to doing a fine job recording audio, ScreenFlow gives you some other audio tweaks such as the ability to add a keyclick sound. For the time being, I’m continuing to use a great freeware application called Keycastr to handle keyboard display duty. I hope they add some more options in future releases turning down the dazzle and up the functionality of this feature. You can also have it automatically display key presses but I’m not a fan of the way it zooms your keypresses across the screen. I also like the way you can easily resize the image and, if you are feeling really spunky, add a reflection. The list of features in the edit process is long but just to point out a few of my favorites I like the way you can spotlight the mouse with a circle the size of your own choosing and feather the edges. I still do some transition work and introductions and closings in Final Cut but with ScreenFlow, all the complicated stuff is already done for me. The trouble is, unless you are very proficient in those applications it will involve a lot of time and, most likely, a few tears. In fact, you can do just about any screen effect with Final Cut and Motion. I’ve done some of these effects in prior screencasts using Final Cut. Using ScreenFlow I can select portions of a clip and resize the screen, call out the front window and blur the background, zoom up and zoom down, and just about any other fancy trick within reason to make it easier on your viewer. Despite the simple interface, however, there are some powerful tools. It is timeline based but not quite so intimidating as Final Cut. This editor reminds me of the old iMovie. So once you have your screencapture completed you can arrange them in ScreenFlow’s handy editor. This application includes its own editor. You then are required to submit those clips into iMovie or Final Cut for editing and processing. Now for most Screencasting applications, that is where the story ends. You can capture multiple takes into one project so you can break larger projects into small bite-sized chunks. I tried this but ultimately decided, as the old line goes, I have a face for radio. You can also elect to record or ignore your system sounds and, if you are really brave, your iSight feed so people can look at your mug while you record your screencast. I use a Blue Snowball for this purpose and while it is not perfect, it does an acceptable job. It also will record audio from either your built in microphone or your own plug-in microphone. ScreenFlow does a dandy job of capturing your various clicks, drags, and actions on your screen. By this I mean you turn it on and the little invisible camera over your shoulder starts taking pictures of the screen. So let me break this down a bit.įirst there is the capture. It gives you one application to capture video and audio and perform sophisticated editing. ScreenFlow is the screencasting application for the rest of us. Well this all changed a few months ago when ScreenFlow came on to the stage. Up until a few months ago I accomplished this through a byzantine series of steps in multiple applications that was both time intensive and spectacularly underwhelming in its result. While I cannot claim to have the superhuman skills of my friend Don McAllister, I do want them to look nice. Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.I’ve been producing screencasts now for almost a year. Now, Gylt is launching on PC and console. And, being an early release, Google’s effective paywall for Stadia access at the time meant that the game came with a hefty hardware investment. On Stadia, Gylt gathered excellent reviews unfortunately, the game wasn’t enough to really attract an audience to the platform. SteamDB is a hobby project and is not affiliated with Valve or Steam. Set in a creepy and melancholic world, GYLT is an eerie story mixing fantasy and reality in a surrealist place where your nightmares become reality. Lunacy: St Rhodes releases on July 27th on PC. You’ll be presented with challenges throughout where you’ll have to find clever ways around the world’s “terrible creatures.” Meet Sally, a brave kid who will do everything it takes to rescue her little cousin from the claws of terrible creatures. Gylt is, at its core, a narrative-based adventure game. But, when Stadia died earlier this year, it took Gylt and some other games with it but thankfully, Gylt is now back with a release on PC and consoles. The first exclusive available on Google Stadia back in 2019 was Gylt, a horror adventure game from Tequila Works, which was actually a ton of fun. The dragon keeper role is to maintain the site off season and to encourage people to respect and enjoy the sanctuary which this oasis of calm provides during the festival. She has held the position of Dragon Keeper since 2012. Sarah has worked at Glastonbury festival for nearly 30 years and in the green fields for over 20. The other dragons were temporary although the fire dragon was made from clay from the festival site and inside was an egg so when it was fired as an earth kiln it left a baby dragon! This particular dragon represents water, there was also an air dragon, earth dragon and a fire dragon. This dragon was built by Ray Brooks in 1994 as part of a circle of dragons. Watch this space.Delores Targaryen, auntie to Daenerys, is a dragon keeper at Glastonbury. However I am still keen to dabble in some of Hobb’s previous series. I’m not left feeling desperate to finish the trilogy. Robin Hobb is obviously a master at what she does, but I can’t help feeling my first foray into her work began with a slightly substandard work. Thymara leaves the prejudices and judgements of her hometown with a group of other misfits and begins to realise she can fend for herself and live amongst those that will not judge her. She volunteers to journey upriver with the group of dragons to find the fabled Elderling city of Kelsingra. Her storyline is perhaps the most believable and intriguing of the lot. Then we have Thymara, a young girl marked by the scales and deformities of a child that should have been abandoned at birth. He fell flat because he simply was not believable as a character. Rounded characters do, of course, have these conflicting traits, but Sedric was never here nor there. Sometimes presented as sympathetic, other times a self-absorbed apathetic ass, I was never quite sure what to make of Sedric. Hest’s secretary and Alise’s guard as she journeys through the Rain Wilds in search of the dragons. Perhaps the greatest enigma of the book is Sedric. Alise remains infuriatingly meek and sombre. We will Alise to discard the shackles of her confined life with Hest, discard her skirts and roam barefoot on the ship’s deck with Leftrin by her side for the rest of her days. Alise and Captain Leftrin find themselves falling in love with one another which is where it gets interesting. He falls for the meek and timid Alise Kincarrion, a gentle academic forced to marry the abominable arsehole Hest Finbok. We have Captain Leftrin, a rogue Han Solo type, who finds a piece of wizardwood (aka old dragon cocoon) and fortifies his ship with the magical substance. The other characters are marginally more riveting. She is furious, proud and, quite frankly, pretty dislikeable. When Sisquara does emerge as the dragon Sintara, she is equally difficult to like or engage with. But I just found it impossible to engage with her. She has reptilian traits and desires that are obviously going to be different from my own. She needs to reach the shore to cocoon herself with her own serpent-spit-cement so she can emerge as a fully-formed dragon in the spring. Here’s where my issues with the characters began. The book opens through the eyes of the serpent Sisarqua. There are various story threads, but they all centre around the birth of a group of new dragons in the swampy and inhospitable Rain Wilds. Hobb’s The Dragon Keeper is the first in The Rain Wild Chronicles. Eager to dabble deeper into the realms of epic fantasy, I was keen to try one of the biggest female names in the genre. Martin, who has made fantasy ‘cool’ again. There are some heavyweight male names knocking around the place, spearheaded by George R. As a female fantasy author, the idea of Robin Hobb really excited me. What he remembers was that, “the transition from PRISMS to Sage (Houdini Beta) and then to Houdini was awesome. Ha Roda also mentioned Stu Mintz and her were in charge of the banner FX with Arnold rotating around the pole. They then light the scene and track those elements into the scene so when it was rendered and comped, it would fit right in. We made it into a procedural pipeline so that those elements are consistent in animation, color, and texture in every scene.Īn FX animator then used that pipeline and plug it into their scenes to generate those 3 elements. The flame, smoke, and distortion were needed for multiple sequences so it made sense to generate it procedurally using POPs / SOPs particles and textures. We also used texture mapping for the banner. I think we may used an equation to plug in for the simulated animation of the banner spinning around the pole and preventing the penetration of the banner on itself. I think it was our first attempt with fabric and deformation using Houdini. I remember that we were pretty excited with Houdini transitioning from Prism. We lit and tracked 3D elements and then have them comped in to the scene.” The jetpack needed flames, smoke, and heat distortion. I also helped the R&D and created a pipeline for shots that has the jetpack in action. She was a 3D animator / FX artist at VIFX, and a sequence supervisor for Jingle. Sage made the PRISMS procedural modelling network more visible with interactive connecting of the nodes (SOPs).”Īnother artist who worked at VIFX at the time, Ha Roda, worked directly on that sequence. “Sage stood for Stand Alone Geometry Editor released in June 1995 and was the last of several new programs written in C++ that shipped with PRISMS. One of them, Michael LaFave, told us the studio adopted a beta version of Houdini that he thought may have been called Odin at some point. We started reaching out to some VIFX employees at the time. OK, so we’re now around 1995/96, and the film that hits the sweet spot for VIFX, which still used PRISMS but was also where the studio tried out Houdini was, Jingle All The Way, for that flagpole scene. It had already been using PRISMS in a big way. And one of the first studios to adopt a beta version of Houdini was VIFX. But, which film was the first to use Houdini? Well, to begin, here’s a bunch of films that had relied on PRISMS:ġ986: Flight of the Navigator - VFX by Omnibus LA: a morphing chrome alien space craftġ993: Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice - VFX by Commotion: a microscopic arterial environmentġ994: Timecop - VFX by VIFX: a time travel effectġ994: True Lies - VFX by Digital Domain: missile contrails (and other effects).Īs you can see, right around now - the mid 90s - SideFX was adapting PRISMS into Houdini. The Duerer tileset dose little of that and actually makes the game look like you are playing in a whole new world. Most tilesets make the game more ‘playable’ but they also add a cartoon like element as well as often changing certain symbols into a picture of the object which can cause confusion when reading text for example. Here is a link to the post where you can see examples of the wonderful artwork: DF Forum PostĪs you can see it’s really beautiful, and the first time I saw it I was impressed with the way it transformed the game. The tileset attempts to make the game look like an old 15th century map. Put it in the data/art directory of your Dwarf Fortress installation. png you must use a program like MS paint to save it properly. In case you need to convert it, do NOT just change the extension to. Part of the fun of playing DF is that you get to use your imagination to create the world… The game itself is just a framework, a scaffolding to help you create a story and a world.Ī while back I came across a post on the DF forum by user ‘HaterSkater’ posting his fabulous ‘Duerer’ tileset. Verify that the tileset is a 24-bit PNG file with transparent background. The dwarfs don’t look any certain way on the screen, it leaves the way they look up to me and I like that. I always end up going back to the plain ASCII because it gives me more room for imagination. In the past, I have tried out many of the different graphical tilesets that are popular (spacefox, Pheobus) but none of them have really stuck. Normally when I play Dwarf Fortress I tend to play with the vanilla release and the ASCII tileset. |
